Outstanding Clinical Educator Award

The mission of the Northern Plains Clinical Education Consortium (NPCEC) is to promote student physical therapist and student physical therapist assistant clinical education through collaboration, professional development, and research. The Northern Plains Clinical Education Consortium (NPCEC) represents PT and PTA Programs throughout Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Nebraska.


The vision of the NPCEC is to promote consistency and harmony among academic and clinical partners, to collaborate in response to the dynamic world of clinical education, and to provide resources to stakeholders. 

In alignment with these mission and vision statements, the NPCEC recognizes one individual each year who exemplifies clinical education excellence with the NPCEC Outstanding Clinical Educator Award.

Criteria for the award:
1.     The individual has actively served as a clinical educator for an NPCEC member institution within the last academic year.
2.     The individual exemplifies excellence in clinical education as demonstrated by their teaching and learning skills, interpersonal skills, and professional competence. 
Sample Behaviors Teaching and Learning

  • Prepares and organizes for optimal learning.

  • Considers student’s level of readiness.

  • Identifies teaching/learning needs and opportunities.

  • Prognosticates student’s potential for success.

  • Designs appropriate learning activities.

  • Delivers explanations clearly.

  • Facilitates critical thinking and a problem-solving approach.

  • Encourages active learning.

  • Appropriately encourages student independence.

  • Finds/makes time for the student.

  • Analyses successes and challenges.

  • Encourages student self-assessment.

  • Evaluates student performance objectively and fairly.

  • Provides specific & comprehensive positive and constructive feedback to the student in both formative and summative manners.

  • Continually self-assesses effectiveness as an educator.

  • Consults with others to advance teaching performance.

  • Uses student feedback to enhance effectiveness.

  • Modifies teaching strategies based on needs.

  • Models continuous lifelong learning (advanced degrees/certifications, continuing education)

  • Welcomes opportunities to share knowledge and collaborate with others to advance the profession and quality patient care (presentations, research experiences, staff development, etc.)

Process for Nomination:
Any student physical therapist or student physical therapist assistant from an academic institution that is an active member of the NPCEC may submit a nomination. Nomination forms are due to the NPCEC secretary by April 30th each year. 

Process for Selection:
Nomination forms received will be blinded and submitted to the NPCEC Awards Committee. The NPCEC Awards Committee will determine the final award recipient.

Award:
The recipient of the Outstanding Clinical Educator will receive a recognition along with a $100 award.
